introduction
History
Classic Chat was built in 2002, when YadaYadi was shut down. It was first built by myself and the chat was installed by ChatPro. My first server space was very expensive, and very basic and limited.
Soon after it's opening the word spread and visitors began showing up from Ol' Freetown/YadaYadi. Within a month Classic Chat had over a hundred members supporting this site.
From it's first day, hackers began visiting the site looking for holes to harass the site for whatever reasons, be it competition. Or just they had issues with FT/YY and did not feel a site resembling FT should be allowed because of their personal issues with FT/YY.
Soon I had some fruitcake hacking the chat, and saying if I wanted to have my site secure, I would have to make HIM an admin, and let HIM run the site.
That was truly a laughing matter, this person made no attempt to do anything but harass this site, even posting child porn like he had at FT/YY which ended up being part of the reason FT/YY closed.
So, as ChatPro was baffled about how these people were accessing the things they were at the chat, and I had just begun being active as a webmaster. I closed cc.net down and moved to another domain to resolve the security issues.
I'm not going to menton any names, these people aren't worth it. I guess the main thing is, ccnet, made it back. and continues on. Yes these so called "hacks" continue to try and visit and harass the site, just because they can, and maybe because they feel threatened by the site, and what may be said about them here.
Like I said, they aren't worth the print. It's a shame the bitterness and rage some chatters and web surfers hold because of the stupid things THEY were involved in, and feel they can punish others because THEY felt they were treated wrongly.
FT/YY has had many spin offs, none of them as succesful as the original Freetown site, even YadaYadi(what is left of the original Freetown scripts and now more a dating site) has become a ghost town. Many of us no longer live on the net, Freetown was a fresh new idea when it opened way back when.
Many folks have moved on and no longer chat on the net as they did, or have moved to more modern and feature filled chats. This site is deticated to Freetown, and what it was, and the chatters who kept the site alive with their charm and style.
Yes, I was one of those people, never caused problems, just enjoyed chatting with the folks who all seemed to be quite friendly and good natured. My eye's were opened to the bitterness and hate when the rejects started showing up here in 2002.
Funny how people think they can impose themselves on others on their own terms, it won't happen on my site, ever.
I've found even with my work with WebAPP those hacker types tend to want to use security as a weapon to push forward their own agenda. That to me seems to be a large lack of ethics to try and impose yourself, and your self serving opinions on others.
The internet is based on freedom, freedom of choice, freedom of opinions, and the freedom to not be a part of things you see as seedy or unethical. In all the things I've done I've never tried to force anyone to do anything, or use anything of mine, that as I see it, is what personal choice is all about.
Yet some folks wish to push their personal opinions, and judgements upon others, without taking a good look at themselves and the poor choice of ethics involved, making decisions on personal grudges and jealousy.
Enough about the past, it's time to focus on the future and make this site a fun and pleasant place to chat and gather.
Recently Freetown was rebuilt by the original programmer and is now named "Freetowne", see the links at the top of the page. I wish him the best in trying to revive the Freetown atmosphere and community. I, in my own attempt, have seen that chatters seem to lean to newer more advanced type chats or IM systems.
But my mission here isn't to keep up with the times, it's to keep a certain type of chat active, while developing a new chat/internet community which shows respect for old friends and the ways and history of the past.
Classic Chat: Our Mission
Let classic Perl based chat live on forever
Dedicated to all the old freetown.com chatters, and Den/Bond for always taking care of us even when freetown flushed. Special mention to Kashmir and DANCER, and the Dream Machine chatters, god bless my friends. And to all the Freetown chatters, we were a special group. Our thoughts at classicchat.net are to offer a few different types of chat, and develop a new internet community.
WebAPP and WebAPP Themes
For those of you looking for my WebAPP themes (ThemeAPP at classicchat.net), that content has moved to
my2cents' House of WebAPP Style and Design, the largest original collection of WebAPP themes ever assembled.
The ThemeAPP name was stolen by a rather unethical splinter WebAPP Mafia group, so I chose a name to respect WebAPP's history, and also someone I respect greatly, Ditto.
webappworld.net has all the WebAPP themes you could ever want in one place!
As well as previews of future WebAPP theme releases and development templates and prototypes in which the WebAPP theme is elaborated and explored.
Techniques and inspirations (CSS) came - as usual - from Stu Nicholls, a CSS magician from UK.
And also DCarter another web design magician from the UK as well. All the themes available at webappworld.net, have been added with the permission of the theme designer.
It will also ensure that people will be directed to "Official" site rather than copycat/clone sites that rip people off and violate copyrights in so many ways!!
The mission of webappworld.net is ongoing WebAPP theme/style development of the best techniques for applying html/CSS processes the current WebAPP theme
structure and theme outlet with a demo of current WebAPP theme releases.
